Singing in the rain: Essendon's David Zaharakis celebrates his winning goal with Brent Stanton.

Bombers steal win in Anzac Day thriller

25/04/2009 6:00:00 PM
Youngster David Zaharakis has booted the winning goal in the final minute to give Essendon a thrilling five-point win over Collingwood in the annual AFL Anzac Day blockbuster at the MCG.

Leroy Jetta looked to have cost the Bombers the game when he failed to pick the ball up in the goalsquare in the dying seconds with the goals at his mercy and his team trailing by a point.

But fourth-gamer Zaharakis slotted the winning goal from 40 metres out as the Bombers won 13.15 (93) to 12.16 (88) before 84,829 fans.

Essendon's Paddy Ryder won the Anzac Medal for the best player afield after being forced to ruck all day when David Hille went down with a knee injury.
